Most of this piece involved slowly dragging light out of an almost entirely black surface and trying not to ruin it immediately by overdoing it.

I wanted the portrait to feel fairly direct and quiet, focusing on the expression and presence of the animal rather than pushing contrast or unnecessary detail. The darker palette made the fur textures and small highlights do most of the work, which was either a good idea or an objectively terrible one depending on the stage of the drawing.
